Bernard and his siblings are familiar faces in the competitive swimming arena. It is only natural that one of his three children would also have the same passion. We caught up with him one weekend supporting his 15-year-old daughter at a swimming club.

He is usually there some three to four times a week, keeping a watchful eye on her. “She needs to be ferried to and fro and she also goes to competitions four to five times a year, here and abroad. It doesn't matter what kids want to be or do. The right parental support is essential. Teach them to fish well and they will do well,” said the 67-year-old. His simple wish for his children is – “that they in turn will have great careers and happiness, and love their families in the same way”.
